Transplanting young ovaries to old mice slightly extends lifespan (Mason et al., 2009). One study using blood proteomics revealed a specific factor that reverses age-related cardiac hypertrophy in mice (Loffredo et al., 2013). Factors both intrinsic and extrinsic to cells affect muscle regeneration (Carlson et al., 2008). Blood levels of a chemokine can also negatively regulate neurogenesis (Villeda et al., 2011). Taken together, these results argue that with the right information aging may be reversable in many tissues. It should also be mentioned that, for example, while signaling pathways drive senescence in T cells, these are likely triggered by upstream factors harder to control like DNA damage (Lanna et al., 2014).
